Joe Cariola - Bass

What gear/settings/effects do you use?
I play a Vester five string bass with EMG active pickups. For my bass sound I use a Korg XR300B bass pedal. I use a reverb effect for the light airy tones, but while I am rocking out I use a solid chorus/studio punch. I use a split signal to further fill out the bass sound.

What is your musical background?
Classical Guitar, Bass, Hand Drums

How long have you been playing?
I have been playing bass for a total of 5 years. I had a hiatus during my military service and have played for 3 solid years currently.

Where do the bulk of your musical ideas come from?
I am highly motivated by a number of musicians. Les Claypool, Paul McCartney, Justin Chancellor (Tool),Vince Hornsby (Sevendust), John Campbell (Lamb of God). The list goes on and on, but it's definitely an interesting mix.

Is there a particular show or recording superstition that you follow?
I usually stand where no one can see me and either jump in place or power smoke a cigarette (not for long, since I'm quitting smoking). I don't really have a recording superstition.

If you could learn to play any other instrument, what would it be and why?
I would learn to play the fiddle. I always wondered how my musical tendencies would translate on to the fiddle.

What is your favorite quote ?
"Fix reason firmly in her seat, and call to her tribunal every fact, every opinion. Question with boldness even the existence of a God; because, if there be one, he must more approve of the homage of reason, than that of blindfolded fear." -Thomas Jefferson

How many tattoos do you have and what are they?

Hehehehe.....I have 7 Chinese symbols with proper translation (Honor, Courage, Nobility, Glory, Death, and Justice) Justice consists of two symbols.

Beyond that, I have a mural designed by Traci Hancock...It's a massive hand drawn tribal design that starts just below my nipples and goes over my shoulders and down my arms and  back..It's a work in progress that is very near completion and I have already considered expanding it down my legs.
